Daily Living

Each day, we work to live out our mission statements. How we do this differs from person to person. Here are some examples of daily practices that you might use.

  • Goal-setting, scheduling, and time management techniques.
  • Trying to be a better listener.
  • Using the “count to three” technique to try to manage anger and impatience.
  • Health-promoting practices like eating healthier, exercising, or getting enough sleep.
  • Artists or musicians might have practices that they do to increase their inspiration or creativity.
  • More philosophical practices, like reflecting on the good things in one's life to increase feelings of contentment and satisfaction.

There are an almost infinite number of practices that we can use. They can be taken from the fields of time-management, psychology, philosophy, "self-help" literature, brain science, the arts, etc. You probably do some of these practices in your life already. One of the benefits of Humanist Practice is to bring together all of these various practices into one coherent framework, grounding them in our naturalistic worldview, and connecting them to our deepest values.
